100 injured in German train crash: police
BAD AIBLING: Two commuter trains collided head-on in southern Germany on Tuesday, killing at least eight people and injuring around 100, in one of the country’s deadliest rail accidents in years.
Hundreds of rescuers were racing to pull passengers from the wreckage in a wooded area near Bad Aibling, a spa town about 60 kilometres (40 miles) southeast of Munich.
Several carriages were overturned.
“We have eight dead on the trains,” said police spokesman Juergen Thaimeier, adding that about 100 people had been injured, 55 of them seriously.
Local police spokesman Martin Winkler had earlier given a toll of four dead.
But rescuers subsequently found another four bodies in the train wreckage.
The “tragic accident occurred on the single-track route between Rosenheim and Holzkirchen this morning shortly after 7:00 am (0600 GMT),” regional rail company Meridian, a subsidiary of the French group Transdev, said in a statement.
The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.
Rainer Scharf, a police officer from the southern state of Bavaria, said that “given the severity of the accident, we believe the two regional trains collided head-on at a low speed.”
He added that the priority was to “rescue the many injured”.
The police tweeted that several hundred emergency services workers were on the scene in the rural area.
Rescue workers from nearby Austria were also on site, rolling news channel NTV said.

February has traditionally been about Valentine’s Day in Pakistan (like the rest of the world) and more recently about Literary Festival in Karachi and Lahore. But not anymore! Henceforth, this is going to be the month of Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Some would say it is not that big a deal. However, for a Pakistani, it is a matter of national pride and the sense of ownership exhibited towards PSL has convinced many to call it unprecedented. It almost seemed an unachievable goal. Messages by international players on social media pledging their support for PSL failed to impress the cricket spectators in Pakistan. Security concerns and event being organised on foreign soil overshadowed the possibility of its success. It was considered impossible to finance the event, organise it in UAE and sponsor foreign players. But local business franchises came forth, biddings were held and international players would now play for Pakistan. All the doubts were brushed away as the first ball was bowled on the pitch of Dubai International Stadium. PSL has officially kicked off!......

Russia shuts down two more banks
MOSCOW: Russia’s central bank said Monday it had revoked the licenses of two more banks as part of government efforts to consolidate the sector as economic troubles mount.
Russia’s 67th lender by assets, Intercommerz had failed to adequately assess risks despite the poor quality of its assets, the central bank said.
“At the same time the bank was involved in dubious transactions,” it added.
The Bank of Russia also said it had revoked the license of a smaller lender, Alta-Bank.
The country’s 186th bank by assets, Alta-Bank had failed to meet its obligations to creditors, the central bank said.
The Russian authorities have been trying to clear the banking sector of hundreds of fragile banks which are often found to employ doubtful or illegal practices.

First US Zika virus transmission reported
First US Zika virus transmission reported.
AUSTIN, Texas: The first known case of Zika virus transmission in the United States was reported in Texas on Tuesday by local health officials, who said it likely was contracted through sex and not a mosquito bite, a day after the World Health Organization declared an international public health emergency.
The virus, linked to severe birth defects in thousands of babies in Brazil, is spreading rapidly in the Americas, and WHO officials on Tuesday expressed concern that it could hit Africa and Asia as well. Zika had been thought to be spread by the bite of mosquitoes of the Aedes genus, so sexual contact as a mode of transmission would be a potentially alarming development.

Bollywood blockbuster ‘Airlift’ irks Indian government
NEW DELHI: A hit Bollywood movie about the evacuation of more than 170,000 Indians from Kuwait in 1990 has angered the government with its portrayal of the country’s diplomats as selfish and unfeeling.
The foreign ministry took the unusual step of issuing a statement on “Airlift”, a fictionalised account of the real-life rescue mission that was released last week to rave reviews.
It shows Indian diplomats leaving Kuwait soon after the Iraqi invasion that sparked the first Gulf war, and portrays the foreign ministry in New Delhi as apathetic to the desperate pleas of Indian migrant workers stuck there.
“@AirliftFilm: Great entertainment but rather short on facts,” foreign ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup tweeted late Thursday.
